I forgot about this one.
So I had my iMAC crash on me the other day. I got up from my desk and went to eat and it decided to die while I was gone. This was not a good thing seeing as I was working on about 5 projects. This was terribly frightening (heh) since none of this work could be easily done on my PC. Certain programs make things work just that much smoother and faster. Anyway. …. .So I made an appointment at the MAC Genius Bar at the local Apple Store.
Now before I get into this let me say that I am in no way bashing MAC or Apple. Quote, Unquote.
So while at the MAC store waiting my turn …. I wanted to check out the new Intel Macs, they are pretty nice running windows and OS X side by side. That is neat! <- The main reason I still have a PC
<RANT>The Genius gets to me and says he would like to take my iMAC in the back to ensure that the RAM is seated all the way. Ok! I know that is not the problem …. but okay. A few minutes pass and he comes out smiling (maybe thats what is was) and tells me that the Logic Board is bad and it needs to be replaced and that it will cost about $900 to fix and take about two weeks. WTF TWO WEEKS?????? $900?????? A new 20″ iMAC is only $1200, what is the point of getting that repair done? I CAN GET A NEW ONE FOR THAT MUCH. But I will be missing data from the hard drive. So what to do what to do. He then tells me that I can probably get this done through an outside Apple Certified Repair Shop for a little less .. but he is not sure how much less, “but it will be less.” Needless to say I was not ready to shell out the cash just yet. So I took the advice of the Genius and brought the iMAC back home.</RANT>
I called several places before I decided that one of them was not so scary sounding over the phone and within the price range I wanted to pay to have this thing fixed. I talked to the Mac Clinic on Flamingo and Lindell, CALL THEM THEY ROCK (702)-312-9763 and he informed me that it would be $90 to diagnose the problem and that we could take it from there. That sounded good enough so on that following Monday I went first thing in the morning and took in the iMAC. It was a nerve racking 24 hours until I got the call back from the Mac Clinic. They called and told me to come and get my MAC and that it was fixed. I’m thinking “Fixed … Already … but a logic board should take way longer than that to replace.” He assured me that it was repaired and that the problem was in fact something in the hard drive. Parameters or something. <RANT>Now I asked the Genius at the Apple Store if that “could” possibly be the problem and “No, it’s the Logic Board” was the response.</RANT>
So $90 later and I have my iMAC back and it turns out the that “Genius” was WRONG. He didn’t even want to do a diagnostics to see if it was anything else. Just replace the logic board .. $900 … thats the problem. WTF is this world coming to?
